YMCA John Island Camp is on of YMCA of Northeastern Ontario’s summer camp and residential outdoor/environmental education centre. We are located near the town of Spanish, Ontario Canada. YMCA John Island Camp is proud of its reputation of providing high quality camp experiences in a fun, caring, and safe environment, all while being on a unique, inspiring setting in the North Channel of Lake Huron!
We are currently looking for a Tripper to join our team of committed and professional staff. Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Tripper will be the main facilitator of John Island Camp’s canoe and hiking tripping program. This person assists in the planning, packing, implementation and debriefing of hiking and canoe trips. This person will be responsible for meeting camper needs and maintaining group safety throughout hiking and canoe trips.
SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with children aged 7-14
Experience leading backcounty wilderness trips from 1-5 days in length in a variety of skill sets such as canoeing, sea kayaking and hiking
Skilled in the technical skills involved with wilderness camping and travel
Current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
Responsible for the planning, packing, implementation and debriefing tripping program
Responsible for focusing on the development of participants technical skills relating to: wilderness travel, risk management, canoeing, sea kayaking, hiking and all program areas of camp
Responsible to build positive rapport and relationships with all campers, and all staff members at John Island Camp
Responsible for taking appropriate self-care to ensure the standard of program quality is maintained throughout the length of the program
