OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE FIELD INSTRUCTORS
FULL TIME
Reports to: Outdoor Leadership Therapist Location: Algonquin Park (South River, Ontario)

The Pine River Institute is an innovative co-ed residential therapeutic school for teens struggling with addictive behaviors, located in Shelburne, Ontario. Our Program fuses education and therapy (group, individual, family, milieu, recreational) through 4 phases: Wilderness, Education, Transition and Aftercare. The school offers programs for students, ages 13 through 19, creating opportunity for teens and their families to engage in a serious and focused transformation process.
We are currently seeking strong, experienced Wilderness Field Instructors to help us deliver this exciting program in Algonquin Park.
Qualifications
We are looking for individuals with the qualifications and related experience in Wilderness field work, demonstrated sound judgment, an ability to maintain clear boundaries, integrity, patience, commitment, a sense of humour, and a commitment to a personal philosophy that is congruent with the Pine River Institute. Required qualifications are:
• WFR or Adv WFA with experience managing backcountry medical issues
• Minimum Bronze Cross Certification with NLS preferred
• Teaching level proficiency in a least three modes of wilderness travel (canoeing, hiking, snow shoeing)
• B.A., B.Sc., or college diploma in related field
• Experience working with at-risk youth and young adults in a wilderness setting
• Clear certification of Vulnerable Sector Criminal Check and willingness to secure Canadian work permit is required.
The primary responsibility of the Field Instructor is to deliver the Outdoor Leadership Experience program, ensure group safety, teach basic wilderness skills, solidify course logistics and through facilitation, maintain focus on the therapeutic elements of the wilderness experience. Schedule is run on a rotation of 8 days in the field (in South River area), 2 days off, 4 days working at the school (in Shelburne area) and then 7 days off shift.
