Job Description

YMCA John Island Camp is on of YMCA of Northeastern Ontario’s summer camp and residential outdoor/environmental education centre. We are located near the town of Spanish, Ontario Canada. YMCA John Island Camp is proud of its reputation of providing high quality camp experiences in a fun, caring, and safe environment, all while being on a unique, inspiring setting in the North Channel of Lake Huron!

We are currently looking for a Norquay River Trainer to join our team of committed and professional staff. Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Norquay River Trainer is responsible for the planning, preparation, implementation and debrief/cleanup of the expedition based version of the second year leadership program at John Island Camp. This person will be responsible for working with a co-instructor to deliver a program focused on developing participant’s leadership, wilderness travel, whitewater canoeing and camper care skills. The goal for this position is to provide opportunity for leadership development that relates directly to the camp environment but is also transferable to other environments.

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education in outdoor leadership, recreation or adventure based programming
  • Experience managing risk associated with wilderness travel on remote rivers
  • Skills in instructing whitewater progression
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and deal with incidents
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for planning, preparing, implementing and debriefing/cleaning up from the expedition based version of the second year leadership development program, Norquay
  • Responsible for facilitating a safe, participant oriented and skill focused remote whitewater wilderness expedition with a co-instructor
  • Responsible for all logistical planning of the trip and equipment inventory, repair and replacement in coordination with the Leadership Manager and Outtripping Manager
