Outward Bound Canada is looking for enthusiastic, hardworking individuals who have the credentials and capacity to work in Ontario Wilderness (with potential occasional work in our Toronto Centre) providing exceptional educative programming to students, teachers, and schools.  The English teacher will prepare and deliver an English credit to students while on expedition in Ontario’s north.  The teacher will work in tandem with another Outward Bound Canada Instructor. Training in specific Outward Bound Canada methodologies will be provided.


  • Prepare lesson plans and teach in accordance with Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum, and guidelines provided.
  • Perform assessment and evaluation of students consistent with Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines.
  • Assist in program and curriculum development.
  • Present clear and effective lessons to engage students in learning.
  • Utilize different methods and styles of teaching.
  • Work effectively with different populations.
  • Co-lead a variety of Outward Bound Canada activities using various travel modes, i.e. hiking, canoeing, backpacking, and using experiential teaching philosophy and techniques.
  • Facilitate positive peer interactions among students.
  • Effectively utilize group and risk management skills, maturity and role modeling to create a safe and supportive environment for student-centered learning.
  • Consult with the Principal regarding specific program issues, problems or concerns.
  • Role model behaviour in line with the values, vision, goals and mission of OBC.
  • Provide direct customer care for participants and their families/teachers/agencies.
  • Complete various program related administrative documents and tasks.
  • Coordinate the transfer of course information to Program Manager and Course Director.
  • Achieve the objectives of the Outward Bound Canada National Safety Policy.
  • Facilitate all incident reporting processes.
  • Complete risk management briefings and debriefings with Program Manager and Course Director.
  • Manage in-field risk management decisions.
  • The majority of work will begin in Katrine, ON.  Instructors may also be asked to work in Toronto, ON. Instructors are responsible for arriving at either work location.


  • Post-Secondary education in outdoor education, adventure therapy, or relevant field.
  • B.Ed. degree for Intermediate Senior level, English teachable preferred.
  • Minimum one full season of work experience leading wilderness canoe trips.
  • Experience teaching Intermediate Senior level English.
  • Commitment to the growth and development of others on an individual, group and societal level.
  • Compassion for people and for the health of the environment.
  • Understanding and application of Outward Bound Canada methods and philosophy.
  • Proficient in behaviour management, crisis intervention and problem solving.
  • Experience in maintaining a positive staff team and environment.
  • Well practiced in communicating effectively with a high level of professionalism.
  • Ability to establish effective rapport with staff and students.
  • Ability to instruct canoe tripping, backpacking, wilderness travel, camp craft skills, ground initiatives, low ropes, rock climbing, and high ropes elements and assess associated risks.
  • Comfort in working with youth from various backgrounds.
  • Wilderness First Responder
  • Bronze Cross or NLS
  • CPR-C
  • Position requires police background check including Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • F-Class (or equivalent) Driver’s License (an asset)
  • Whitewater Rescue Technician (an asset)
  • Moving Water Paddling Certification (an asset)


  • Per diem rate range $140 – $175
