Job Description

As a fishing guide at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, you will guide guests on float, wade and heli-fishing trips on rivers, lakes and the ocean within Clayoquot Sound. The ideal candidate is experienced in both fly and spin-rod deep sea fishing and is committed to guest safety first and foremost.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Guide float, wade, and heli- fly fishing trips on area rivers, lakes and the ocean.

  • Ensure guests are performing activity in safe and fun manner.
  • Provide education and training, if necessary, before the trip to ensure a high-level fly-fishing experience while maintaining safety of guests while fishing or around the helicopter.
  • Encourage responsible fishing to protect the biodiversity of the rivers and lakes.

    Secondary responsibilities:

  • Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintain an excellent standard of customer service.
  • Provide a detailed safety briefing of the trip and helicopter procedures and protocols while assessing each guest’s ability to participate in the activity.
  • Responsible for the safety of the party and administers first aid if needed.
  • Employ excellent risk management decision making in remote settings.
  • Engage and respond to guests in a positive, friendly and supportive manner, including meeting their expressed and unexpressed needs.
  • Provide excellent interpretation to our guests on natural and cultural history topics pertinent to each trip, such as early history of fishing areas, ecology of fishing environments etc.
  • Be flexible in your job role and willing to assist in all other duties, within reason, as requested by your manager according to training you have been given.
  • Must be able to attend training in April-May.
  • Help set-up camp at the beginning of the season, as well as take-town at end of season.

    Qualifications/Skills required:
    • Physically fit, able to work long hours in the field
    • Ability to obtain a Canadian Freshwater Guide License.
    • Chainsaw experience a plus
    • Language skills are preferred, especially French and Spanish. Not mandatory
    • Canadian Freshwater Guide License (AAGL)Excellent customer service and communication skills.
    • Marine Radio Operation certification
    • Wilderness First Aid certification (Wilderness First Responder preferred)
    • Driver’s License
    • Experienced in all aspects of fly-fishing rivers, streams and lakes and ocean.
    • Knowledge about the local area and history is an asset.
    • Positive, supportive team player
