Full-Time Camp Director

Job Description

Duration:                 Full time, permanent


Organization Background:

Christie Lake Kids (CLK) is a charitable organization that has been serving children and youth from economically disadvantaged families in the Ottawa area since 1922. Through our Transformative Recreation™ program model, CLK provides year round services through an excellent camping experience and strategically located inner city recreational opportunities. CLK’s mandate is to provide high quality recreation opportunities that help children and youth living in low-income communities build the skills necessary for developing long-term resiliency.


Summary of position:

Reporting to the Executive Director and Associate Executive Director, the Camp Director is responsible for overseeing all of Christie Lake Kids’ camp operations, standards, programs and services. The Camp Director will work in partnership with Christie Lake Kids’ Inner City Program Director and the Associate Executive Director to develop and integrate camp and city-based programming to ensure year-long continuity for the children and youth served by Christie Lake Kids. The Camp Director will also work closely with the on-site Facilities Manager to manage property rentals and maintenance projects at Christie Lake Kids Camp. This is a full year, salaried position requiring residency at camp during the summer months.



Overseeing all aspects of camp operations, including:

Human Resources

  • Staff recruitment, hiring, training and supervision of a seasonal staff of approximately 90 members, including Junior Staff (25), Counsellors (35), Senior Staff (25) and Kitchen Staff (5), and other volunteers as needed.

Program Development and Evaluation

  • Develop programs within Christie Lake Kid’s Transformative Recreation™ program model. Develop and maintain best practices in line with this program model.
  • Maintain and build community partnerships while fostering community, youth, volunteer and alumni engagement. Maintain positive relationships with families of clients.
  • Ensure regular database entry of registration and evaluation data for creation of research and evaluation reports.
  • Draft annual camp budget and monitor account expenses throughout the year.

Program Delivery

  • Oversee in-camp, out-tripping and Leaders-in-Training programs.
  • Maintain and implement best practices in camp programming with economically disadvantaged children and youth. Oversee regular program operations, and conduct evaluations to measure program impacts.
  • Oversee registration process and camper assessments.
  • Ensure camp registration process is accessible to families facing program barriers using Active Pursuit model.
  • Advocate for camper success; coach and work with summer staff team to provide alternative care strategies for campers exhibiting challenging behaviours. Ensure open communication with families, caregivers, social workers, the Children’s Aid Society and any other referral agencies.
  • Collaborate with Inner-City Program Team to deliver weekend camps throughout the school year.
  • Ensure health and safety of campers and staff during programs. Supervise the maintenance and monitoring of all standards and regulations of practice. Continuously conduct risk management and give due diligence in keeping with the regulations and accepted standards of residence camp programs including the Ontario Camp Association, Local Public Health Authority, Red Cross and Association of Challenge Course Technologies.

Site Management

  • Attend volunteer events at the camp with corporate partners as coordinated by the Facilities Manager.
  • Support Facilities Manager to develop and execute new builds and oversee site maintenance.

Social Enterprise

  • Manage camp rental programs for various corporate, non-profit and school groups.
  • Develop year-round social enterprise opportunities to increase camp rental revenue.
  • Ensure camp rental information on website is both current and accurate.

Other responsibilities as assigned



  • University degree in social work, psychology or related field
  • Valid G Class licence (F Class licence an asset)
  • Strong skills and experience working with children and youth
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with summer camp or recreational programming
  • Ability to make decisions and operate in a busy and sometimes stressful environment
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently to meet deadlines
  • Available to work in a residential position during the months of July and August. Able to work on select weekends throughout the year.
