Qualifications Required:
•18 years of age by commencement of camp program
•Current Standard First Aid & CPR
•Pleasure Craft Operators Card
•Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) Green Sail, equivalent or higher sailing certification
•Programme delivery in a residential camp setting
•On site residence is a requirement of this position
•Evening and weekend work is a requirement
•Hours of work will vary with registered programming program hours are usually 7:30am to 10:00pm
•A clear Criminal Record Check
•A clear Intervention Record Check through Alberta Children’s Services
•Contract dates are July 1st – Aug 30th 2012
Major Responsibilities:
With the assistance of the Sailing Counsellor and an Assistant Counsellor, the Sailing Instructor helps to plan and deliver Canadian Yachting Association White Sail I, II and III Youth Sailing Camps.
Position Duties
Maintain a high quality program demonstrating quality instruction and strong leadership:
•Develop a course outline
•Prepare all instructional aids
•Coordinate ordering and distribution of CYA materials
•Orient Sailing Counsellor and Assistant Counsellor to instructional standards
•Keep Programme Technician informed of changes to course outline and to general flow of the programme
•Provide supervision of Sailing Counsellor and Assistant Counsellor as required to maintain programme quality.
•Communicate expectations through continual feedback throughout summer programmes.
•Ensure all emergency procedures equipment is in small rescue craft at all times.
•Demonstrate responsible leadership in determining if weather (wind conditions) allows a program to go onto the lake.
Maintain and repair sailing equipment:
•Ensure equipment is ready for use at the beginning of each sailing day.
•Ensure that sailing equipment is stored properly and securely at the end of every day
•Inform Programme Technician of any necessary repairs
Programme Planning and Delivery
•Play a role in planning and delivering all camp programmes, including: special events; campfires; wide games; and, mealtime programme
•Plan and deliver programmes for assigned camper group, following specified programme guidelines
•Effectively manage safety risks at all times
•Include campers of all abilities in all programmes
Camper Care and Supervision
•Ensure campers return home in the same (or better) condition in which they were sent
•Manage all risks present during the camp session
•Ensure campers maintain an adequate level of health and hygiene
•Assist campers in problem solving dilemmas as they occur, referring the dilemmas to appropriate resource staff as needed
•Redirect the behavior of campers as needed in a fair and appropriate way
•Provide 24 hour per day positive role modeling
Administrative Duties
•Assist in administration and maintenance duties as assigned
•Help campers to keep their area in a clean and orderly manner
•Assist campers in carrying out sparkle time duties as assigned
•Complete set-up and clean-up tasks before and after camp sessions
•Write a report on summer camp programmes to be completed prior to the last week of camp
