Specialist, Watershed Monitoring
SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
Reporting to the Senior Specialist, Watershed Monitoring and working closely with the other Specialists, Watershed Monitoring in the Integrated Watershed Monitoring Program (IWMP), the primary responsibilities will be to coordinate/oversee terrestrial monitoring activities including field inventories, information management and summary reports. This position will also include the analysis, interpretation and reporting of data related to monitoring of terrestrial ecosystems (forest, wetland and riparian vegetation).
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor of Science, specializing in ecology, biology, environmental science, botany or related subject; Master of Science would be an asset;
- Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience; 5 years or more would be an asset;
- Knowledge of the terrestrial ecology (flora, fauna, soils) of the Credit River watershed and Southern Ontario;
- Working knowledge of and experience with standardized terrestrial field inventory protocols, such as the EMAN forest plot, forest bird and marsh monitoring protocols;
- Demonstrated experience supervising staff both in the field and office;
- Excellent organization, interpersonal, communication, presentation and writing skills;
- Demonstrated experience in technical report writing and communication in a variety of formats;
- Demonstrated knowledge of statistical analysis principles, techniques and software packages such as ‘R’, STATISTICA or other similar programs would be an asset;
- Must have a valid Class G driver’s license. Successful candidate will be required to provide a current MTO driver’s abstract.
SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS
- Oversee pre-monitoring activities (such as scheduling and landowner contact), fieldwork and post-monitoring activities (such as data entry and landowner packages), where required, ensuring health and safety at all times.
- Supervise, train and evaluate staff;
- Participate in field data collection as necessary;
- Review and refine study design as it relates to monitoring in forest and wetland communities, specifically with respect to characterizing forest structure;
- Review literature and select reporting indicators that will be used to evaluate the health of forest salamander communities and forest soils.
- Lead and assist technical report writing including an IWMP data standards document and multi-year monitoring reports;
- Work collaboratively with other members of the monitoring team on analysis, reporting, information management, data collection, budgeting and hiring of staff whenever appropriate;
- Promote the terrestrial component of the Integrated Watershed Monitoring Program through the presentation of papers or posters at workshops or conferences, wherever possible;
- Other duties as assigned by Senior Specialist, Watershed Monitoring and Program Manager, Watershed Monitoring.
Anticipated Start and End Dates: May 15th, 2017 to June 15th, 2018 (35 hours/week)
Annual Salary Starting at: $ 61,905
