Conservation Research Analyst
The Conservation Research Analyst will assist with advising conservation research staff on experimental or field design and data analysis, conduct data analysis, database maintenance, and drafting scientific publications. The position will advance the mission of the Calgary Zoo by applying science to discover conservation strategies that effectively advance the conservation and recovery of species or ecosystems. Working within a public institution, the position will also facilitate knowledge transfer to other zoo departments, donors, and the general media.
Responsibilities:
* Monitoring latest developments in statistical approaches (including sampling design and analysis)
* Provide overarching guidance, advice and support on data analysis for conservation science and application on an ongoing basis
* Assisting other conservation research staff with data analysis
* Assisting with literature searches and literature-based data searches
* Liaising with external statistics experts as needed
* Assisting on methods and results sections for publications
* Occasional co-authorship on some publications
* Maintaining and developing databases including relational databases
* Complies with the zoo’s health and safety program.
* Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Minimum of MSc in Science or related field required.
* A passion for using science as a tool for the advancement of nature conservation
* Great database management and statistical analysis skills with a conservation ecology background preferred
* Background in experimental and/or field sampling design
* Track record in publishing scientific papers
* Extensive experience on field ecology projects
* 5+ years of experience analyzing biological or ecological information
* Keen interest to acquire additional quantitative skills
* Excellent communication and leadership skills in a team environment
* Programming skills in statistical software such as R
Physical demands:
* Extensive office work, involving long periods of sitting at computer work stations.
* Occasional field work may be required, which could involve hazards such as exposure to dangerous animals, insects, risk of sunburn or frostbite, working with field equipment such as trucks or ATVs, and heavy lifting of field equipment.
* Occasional travel may be required.
