Assistant Environmental Technician, Restoration Projects – Full-Time Position
SUMMARYY OF FUNCTION:
To assist with the implementation of habitat enhancement and restoration projects. This position has a particular focus on the planting component of the restoration plans. Overall, this position plays an integral role in assisting in the delivery of restoration projects including wetlands, streams, forests, shoreline enhancement and meadows. Working safely and operating equipment is a condition of employment.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Post-secondary Degree or Diploma in resource management, restoration ecology, environmental sciences, fish and wildlife management or related field;
- Minimum 2 years of experience related to major tasks; Forestry degree/diploma an asset;
- Strong knowledge of restoration ecology and natural succession forest ecosystem dynamics;
- Excellent silvicultural skills and plant identification knowledge;
- Knowledge of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, wildlife habitat requirements and wildlife management;
- Skilled in the operation of small machinery and construction equipment;
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions;
- Team player with experience with working on multiple projects with multiple objectives;
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment with deadlines;
- Strong communication skills and proven attention to detail while maintaining productivity and efficiency;
- Ability to work in ESRI ArcGIS products and methods;
- Demonstrated abilities in spreadsheet programs and applications, as well as MS Office;
- Valid Ontario G driver’s license (Class A an asset);
- Knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act;
- Standard first aid and CPR an asset.
SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS:
Perform the following tasks under direct supervision.
- Assist with the implementation of habitat restoration projects focusing on tree and shrub plantings.
- Assist with the construction and deployment of habitat features.
- Assist with the collection and analysis of biophysical information including habitat assessments and restoration opportunities.
- Assist with supervision of field activities and training of seasonal staff.
- Assist with operation and maintenance of equipment, including tractors and implements.
- Purchase relevant equipment and materials as needed.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
