The GIS Analyst reports to the GIS Program Lead. This position provides GIS analysis, GIS support and data management to fRI Research staff, programs, and associations.
The GIS Program helps to develop tools for researchers (staff) to improve their workflows. For example, processing large amounts of data and customizing scripts/tools for either pre-field work preparation (i.e. site selection) or post-data collection. Tools are also developed, improved and maintained for use by fRI Research partners. For example, the Grizzly Bear Tools are part of the Grizzly Bear Annual Deliverables. These tools allow partners to the Grizzly Bear Program to run various analysis scenarios that enable them to make better decisions in their land and resource management planning. The GIS Program also helps with visualization products such as maps, online maps, and movement animations.
The successful applicant will be:
- Creating , maintaining and documenting spatial and non-spatial data;
- Creating, maintaining and improving GIS scripts, models, tools and workflows to meet user requirements in data loading, editing, conversion and analysis;
- Performing geospatial analysis to solve both common and unique problems on vector and raster data;
- Working with optical and LiDAR remote sensing products for data extraction;
- Building, customizing and maintaining databases to manage field data from multiple sources; and
- Providing support for cartographic design and high quality map production.
Essential Job Qualifications
- Successful completion of a Technical diploma in GIS from a reputed educational institute and an undergraduate degree or diploma in natural resource sciences;
- Minimum 3 years of work experience using GIS in spatial analysis and data management in a natural resources field;
- Proficient with ArcGIS 10.x desktop software and extensions (primarily Spatial and 3D Analyst);
- Working understanding of other ESRI products such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Earth, ArcGIS Online, and applicable mobile applications;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to translate research questions and needs to solutions; • Strong programming skills for modelling and customizing tools and workflows using Python, Model Builder, Visual Basic and R;
- Ability to convert data from multiple sources and be able to work with GPS data and mobile technology for data collection;
- Strong skills in database design, customization and management to manage all aspects of data collection, querying, summarization, and distribution;
- Understanding of optical and LiDAR remote sensing; • Ability to train and provide technical support to GIS users;
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills to deal with multiple ongoing projects, shifting priorities and working with tight deadlines;
- Highly motivated and able to work both independently and with a multi-disciplinary team;
- Creative, original and have attention to detail to effectively convey research information; and
- Strong oral, written, and electronic communication skills.
Job Requirements
- Must be eligible to work in Canada;
- Must be willing to relocate to Hinton, Alberta; and
- The selected individual should be comfortable working for extended periods of time in front of a computer workstation in an office environment.
Salary
$54,000 to $64,000 annually, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
