Habitat Biology Specialist
Salary $65,033.32 – $74,351.64 annually

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is responsible for stewardship of Provincial Crown land and natural resources, and protection of B.C.’s archaeological and heritage resources. Overseeing a land base of 94.8 million hectares, the Ministry supports the sustainable management of forest, mineral and land resources, the prosperity, viability and competitiveness of industries that use them, and public access for a wide range of activities such as hunting, fishing and recreation. The Ministry is responsible for policy development, operational management and implementation, and oversees over 50 statutes and associated regulations.
The role and work of the Habitat Section of Resource Management in the Cariboo Region of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) is to conserve and manage healthy native species and ecosystems. The work involves a broad range of subject areas and functions including collecting and managing information on species habitats and ecosystems, species at risk, habitat conservation, management and restoration, and developing and implementing standards and guidelines related to these areas.
The Habitat Biology Specialist will focus on terrestrial biodiversity and habitat management at the landscape scale, involved mainly with ungulate (caribou, mountain goat, bighorn sheep) habitat management, including resource development activities, access management, and habitat supply modelling.
Qualifications for this role include:
• Degree in biological sciences, plus 5 years of related experience; OR,
• Master of Science in biological sciences, plus 4 years of related experience; OR,
• PhD degree in biological sciences, plus 3 years of related experience.
• Experience interpreting and applying environmental management legislation, regulations and policies.
• Advanced scientific knowledge of terrestrial biodiversity and ecology at the landscape scale, primarily involving habitat management of caribou, California bighorn sheep, mountain goat, moose, mule deer.
• Experience conducting public consultation processes dealing with environmental management issues.
• Valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s licence.
• Meet safety standards of Work Safe BC.
• May require the operation of a variety of equipment.
• Conducts field work which may include the following: travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Ability to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
